Shameless Self-Promo Saturday! (from Comedy Nerds editor Danielle)
So for the last two semesters, I’ve been working on my senior design project and last night was the opening of our show in the gallery! Since my project is comedy-themed, I figured I would share it with you guys! (That, and Kristin told me to).
Comic Sans walks into a bar. Insert pun-filled punch line about how the bartender won’t serve his ‘type’ and we have two of the elements that comprise a majority of my work. No, not going to bars and utilizing Comic Sans, but the fusion of design and comedy. From a very young age, I learned how important it was to laugh, not only at others, but at yourself as well. I also learned that I had the ability to make others laugh, and so that became my main joy in life, even if it was occasionally at my own expense.
My senior project is a poster series designed to promote a handful of my favorite smaller-name comedians whom I believe to be among the most talented comedians today. The posters are accompanied by audio recordings of each of the artists to better introduce the viewer to the comedian, as simply reading a few lines on a poster does not really do their work much justice. For best results, the comedians really need to be heard.
The posters are all done in Helvetica and all of the illustrations are hand-drawn in Illustrator. The color scheme is basic and bright and utilizes eight colors in total. Each individual poster is limited and incorporates basic elements of each of the comedians’ personalities or defining features, whether it is an icon of a hobby that they enjoy or text arranged in a manner that reflects something about them. I am a fan of minimalist posters and bold design and so I strove to create a happy medium between the two. I chose Helvetica because of its modern simplicity but I also added my own bold twist to it and I tried to use as few colors as possible to add to the minimal look but still tried to keep them bright and eye-catching.
So enjoy my project, and remember that laughter is the best medicine (besides actual medicine, that is.)
my wall in the gallery! :)
you have no idea how exciting it is to see people experiencing your project the way it was meant to be experienced and enjoying it too. nothing makes me happier.
my sister thoroughly enjoying the free helping of Mulaney.
the sign on the tip jar says “spare change, pocket lint, or sage words of wisdom.” because every good comedy venue has a tip jar, right? also, those stickers were a bitch and a half to cut out. (all by hand, btw.)
I also had to give a presentation in front of about 100 people. talk about nerve-wrecking.
you can check out the digital versions of these posters at the tumblr I created for the project here!
I’m still beaming over how well everything turned out! now I can graduate and move back home where I can finally attend all of those comedy shows I always bug you guys about!
EDIT: I completely forgot to credit one of our Comedy Nerds editors, Rachel, with coming up with the name LOL and Behold!
also, if you want some of these stickers/the shitty CD mixes I made but didn’t give out because I couldn’t find labels nice enough for my show, leave me your mailing address in my ask box (because if you left it in this ask box, the other 4 editors would totally stalk your shit.) :)
…wait, I never actually posted this here???
well, this is how the actual gallery part of the project went! super!

Patton Oswalt talks about giving up drugs now that he has a daughter.
What’re you having there, Lucky Charms? Alright, lemme tell the whole conspiracy behind Lucky Charms, man.
Genius lol
this is one of my favorite bits of his.
John Mulaney
relevant to his poster in my project. basketball is one of the underlying themes in a few of his more popular jokes.
i love this style of pulpy pinup art, if i ever get to make albums or posters for anything i hope i can find a way to recreate this style.
p.s. comedians as detectives, FTW
Patton strikes again with another amazing poster design. Seriously, what I would give to be on the team that designs his promotional posters.
